This session examines how healthcare organizations can integrate the Total Worker Health® framework to support employees in recovery from substance use disorders (SUD). Grounded in recent research, the session emphasizes the importance of addressing workplace hazards, reducing stigma, and fostering positive work environments. Healthcare professionals will learn strategies to create recovery-friendly workplace policies, practices, and programs that align with their mission to care for others and enhance employee well-being and organizational resilience. More importantly, this session equips participants with practical tools for improving recovery outcomes and cultivating a supportive workplace culture in healthcare settings.

David Shapiro
David Shapiro is assistant director of programs and partnerships at the Center for Health, Work & Environment (CHWE). In this role, he oversees CHWE’s signature public health outreach programs, Health Links® and the Colorado Recovery Friendly Workplace Initiative™. David consults with organizations, sharing resources and recommendations to help them implement the Total Worker Health® approach and support worker health, safety, and well-being. David also develops and manages workplace training on workplace mental health, chronic disease prevention and management, and family-friendly workplaces. Before joining the center, David served as the business relations manager for EPIC (Executives Partnering to Invest in Children). He helped the organization grow from 10 founding members to over 75 executives focused on Colorado’s investment in early childhood. David’s past work experience includes a successful sales career in Colorado’s ski industry and leading a fatherhood initiative in the Summit County (Colorado) Government’s Youth & Family Services division.
