This session will address research that was done with substance use treatment providers who provide care to nurses and physicians in Colorado. The findings around barriers and facilitators to seeking treatment will be shared along with research on stigma related to substance use among these healthcare professionals and their ability to return to work. Insights from this study can be used to better understand one’s journey as a healthcare professional with treatment and recovery and returning to work.

Heidi L. McNeely, PhD, RN, PCNS-BC, NEA-BC is an accomplished nursing executive leader, researcher, and mentor. McNeely currently serves as Vice President of Individual Credentialing and Research at the American Nurses Enterprise. Her career spans diverse roles, including Drug Diversion Prevention Officer at Children’s Hospital Colorado, Senior Consultant at Visante, Inc., and Researcher with The Schreiber Research Group. She has held clinical, program coordination, and specialist positions in pediatric and public health settings. She has contributed to professional organizations as VP of Education and Board Member for the International Health Facility Diversion Association, Commissioner and Chair for the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Certification, and committee roles with the Society of Pediatric Nurses. Dr. McNeely’s research focuses on substance use, patient safety, and pediatric care, with numerous peer-reviewed publications and presentations. She is also dedicated to community service, mentoring, and advocacy, earning multiple honors for her contributions to nursing excellence and healthcare quality.
