The policies and procedures for dispensing and disposal of control substance (CS) medications in hospitals can vary. Navigating legal requirements and managing risks associated with CS can be difficult. It is essential to have proper disposal processes in place that help to prevent medication diversion. According to the Joint Commission, an estimated 10% of health care professionals abuse and divert CS medications. Medication diversion not only affects the patient, but also the organization. Diversion can lead to millions in monetary losses. Commonly abused and diverted medications in a healthcare setting are opioids and benzodiazepines. Diversion often occurs during wasting of CS medications. Finding opportunities to minimize CS waste is an important way to decrease the risk of diversion.
